There is no longer any doubt that blogging has captured the world's imagination like few other Internet phenomenon have before or since. The immense popularity of blogging however has only served to focus attention on numerous bloggers that are seemingly unaware of blogging etiquette. If you have been a frequent observer of the blogging phenomenon for a number of years now, then you probably know what we are talking about. The relative lack of blogging etiquette has only emphasized the need to maintain some sort of structure and the blogging arena.
Blogging is a unique means of expression in itself, and that what was once a fairly invalided audience has now transcended geographical boundaries to encompass the rest of the world. While the personal approach remains a valid means of expression, the modern day blogger should at least make an effort to be understood by a wider range of readers.
Blogging was originally used as a way for people to get their thoughts out on the Internet regardless of how trivial or insignificant they may seem to be. There is certainly nothing stopping you from doing the same today if you wish, although you can hardly expect everyone who comes across your blog to be interested in the minutiae of your day to day life. You may therefore want to start blogging about more things that would be interesting to your readers, instead of merely blogging about what you had for lunch!
A good blog is always written by someone who knows what he is talking about. You will greatly increase the chances of your blog's success if the subject that you are writing about is something that you are passionate about or at least have some degree of familiarity in. This doesn't necessarily mean that you will have to be a recognized expert on the subject, although it would help to have more than a casual interest in what your blog is all about. Keep in mind that your readers will gradually come to depend on your blog as a source of information that they cannot get anywhere else, and being knowledgeable in your niche would ensure your reputation as a person of authority.
Ripping off other people's content is a no no. If you have nothing at all to write on your blog, resist the urge to lift content from other blogs. Keep the golden rule in mind, and don't rip off content if you don't want other people ripping off content from you!
Finally, always write as if your reputation is at stake. Anything that you write in your blog may find its way back to you in the future. Always be accountable for your thoughts and actions online, and act the same way that you would in real life.
